Through conversations with my grandmother, I learned many secrets about herbal home remedies. I learned that herbal remedies have been used for thousands of years to treat a variety health conditions. Many of the secrets to their healing powers are not documented, so many are lost. You can easily find herbal home remedies by simply looking for them along side roads or in our garden.
Incorporating herbs into your diet can provide many health benefits. I have been researching herbal home remedies since the conversation and I have learned more about them.
- Garlic. Garlic is a herb that can be used in many cooking recipes. Garlic is often used to enhance the flavor of food. However, there are other uses for garlic. This is one of the many herbal remedies that can be used to treat your body as an antibiotic. Alliin is an antioxidant found in garlic. When you chop or crush garlic cloves, alliin becomes an enzyme. These enzymes activate the cellular activity necessary to fight infection.
- Rosemary. Rosemary is a herb you use to marinate chicken. You may not know, but rosemary has healing properties. Rosemary is a mild analgesic and stimulant that can be used as a herbal remedy. It is useful for people who suffer from frequent headaches or poor circulation. Don’t forget to add fresh rosemary to your next meal.
- Lemongrass. Lemongrass is a common herb in Asian cooking. Folklore has it that lemongrass is used for its antibacterial, antifungal, and fever-reducing properties. This was according to my grandmother. According to the internet, lemongrass is a popular herb medication in Brazil that can be used to treat nervous disorders and stomach issues. The Amazonians drink lemongrass tea as a sedative. More research is being done on lemongrass. It is believed to be helpful in stomach upsets, gas and bowel disorders, as well as nausea and vomiting. Lemongrass can also be used to treat pain and acne.
- Cranberry juice is another herbal remedy drink. My grandmother’s knowledge and a quick search on the internet led me to the conclusion that cranberry is a herb. Cranberry is a powerful natural antibiotic for urinary tract infections. It prevents bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls. This makes it very difficult for bacteria to grow in the bladder.
