    The American Prevalence and Prevention Study (AMPP) was the largest ever study on migraines. It found that migraines affect 12 per cent of Americans over 12 years old – almost three quarters of them women. Nine out of ten migraine sufferers say they are able to function normally while suffering from migraines. Nearly three quarters of those who have suffered from migraines need to be bedridden, preferably in a darkened room with no sensory stimuli.

    More than 25% of migraine sufferers report having to miss work for at least one day in a three-month span. About 30% of them also report having to cancel family or social events. Experts believe migraines are caused by both hormonal and genetic factors. Three out of three migraine sufferers are women. The brain’s pain modulation centers may be affected by internal hormonal triggers from hypothalamus gland. Recent research has found that some migraines can be linked to mutations in certain genes, although most people with a migraine aren’t affected by these mutations.

    Migraine risk can also be increased by lifestyle factors like smoking, excessive caffeine, inactivity, and overuse medication. It is one of most severe conditions known to mankind. Migraines are more severe than headaches. They can cause throbbing, nausea and/or sensitivity of light or sound. Migraines can be more severe and last for longer.
