There is still some controversy about whether aspartame causes headaches in those who consume it. Aspartame is the FDA’s most researched food additive. Although there have been numerous reports of users experiencing severe migraine headaches, the FDA says that aspartame is the most researched food additive ever approved.

    Research

Various institutions have conducted studies to show that the link is not causal. According to the FDA, they have reviewed the results of more than 100 clinical trials and doxological research and have concluded that aspartame can be consumed by the general population. The industry sought an alternative product after concerns were raised about saccharin, an artificial sweetener that was marketed as Sweet ’n Low in the 1970s.

Saccharin is still on the list of potential carcinogens, as it has been shown to cause cancer in animals. However, it is still a popular sweetener. Aspartame is marketed under brands such as Equal and NutraSweet. It was approved by FDA in 1981 and can be found in many diet drinks, foods, and gum. It is also heavily promoted as a tabletop sweetener.

    Did you know?

Dieters who want to cut down on sugar intake often use Aspartame. It is a low-calorie product that has gained popularity with calorie counters around the world. Aspartame users have reported many adverse effects over the past decade, including migraine headaches. A Duke University Medical Center study examined the claims of patients who suffered severe headaches from aspartame.

What To Do About Chronic Headaches?

The study was conducted by Dr Susan Schiffman, with Monsanto/NutraSweet contributing to the costs. You will recall that NutraSweet is the brand under which aspartame was marketed. Researchers evaluated 40 patients suffering from aspartame-related headaches. The study included subjects who were given a 30mg/kg dose on days three and five. Others were given a placebo. The study involved 35% of the volunteers who consumed aspartame, while 45% who received a placebo developed headaches.

The study has been frequently criticized for its poor results and short-term conditions. Researchers countered by claiming that the study was valid because it followed all CDC guidelines. There are many claims that aspartame promotes migraines. Over 200 studies have been conducted by researchers to assess the safety of aspartame. They looked at everything, from epilepsy to lymphoma.

    Keep in mind

According to the FDA, it is completely safe. Aspartame advocates have expressed concerns that people may overlook serious medical conditions and that blaming aspartame as the cause of migraines could lead to more serious health problems. No matter what the cause of migraines or frequent headaches is, patients should consult their doctor. The medical community believes that migraine sufferers who stop taking aspartame sweetened drinks and foods and notice a reduction in their symptoms are experiencing an ingrained reaction.

      How To Combat Migraine Headaches?

They believe that aspartame is responsible for their symptoms and that the absence of aspartame will cause the pain to stop. It is also possible that this will work in the opposite direction. If they believe that drinking aspartame sweetened beverages will cause them headaches, they will develop one. This theory was supported by the Duke trial results. This is not a proven fact. There has been no medical evidence to support the idea that aspartame consumption can cause migraines.
