    You may have heard the expression, “Do unto other people as you would like them to do unto you.” I would like to change that phrase and say, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Headache pain is something you should take care of. Many of us suffer from migraines and chronic tension headaches. We forget to take care of our own needs. We have plenty to take care of those we love, but not enough for ourselves.

    Chronic Headache

    I have chronic headaches and have missed many important events because I was suffering from a migraine, tension headache or sinus headache for the past week. I feel guilty for not being able to attend a family gathering or child’s game because of my headaches. It is important to recognize that some things are beyond our control.

    Did you choose this pain or not? No! It is not your fault. The headache is not your fault. You could wish it away. What can we do? Don’t waste your good days with no headache pain. Don’t use them to make up for what you missed because of headache pain. Do something that makes your feel better. For a change, put yourself first. List the things that make your heart happy. List as many items as possible. Pick one thing from the list that you feel is important and complete it when you have a good day.

    You can do anything from taking a hot bath to getting a massage. Make yourself a priority. It seems that pain is how we are defined. This is not the way it should be. We are in control and must take responsibility for our own health. First, get evaluated by a doctor. Then, do what he tells you. If you are prescribed medication, take it. Stop using caffeine or sugar if you are sensitive.

    Get help for stress and improve your posture at the computers. Get more sleep if you are struggling with headaches. Take care of yourself. You are important, that’s what I am trying to convey. Chronic headache pain should not be a problem.

    Take Control

    You can control it. If there’s nothing you can do, then so be it. Do not feel guilty or ashamed that you are unable to participate in every activity due to headache pain. It is normal and not your fault. Do your best to avoid the pain. If that is not possible, then just relax and let the headache go.

    Remember to take care of yourself and your needs. If you don’t, you won’t have anything to help others. You are important, and even if you have many headaches, it doesn’t make you less valuable. It is important to understand that you matter and that what you do matters. Maybe your pain makes you more sensitive and compassionate than the average person.
