What is Zcash? is it too late to invest in ZEC?

00:00 It's July 22nd 2017 and on this crypto coin show, let's get into one of the more promising blockchain projects currently in the top 15 coins, Z cash.
00:06 Z cash is a decentralized and open source cryptocurrency with strong privacy protections.
00:13 Transactions are shielded, hiding the sender recipient and value on the blockchain.
00:19 It's like the secure transport layer or SSL version of Bitcoin.
00:23 But is Zcash good to buy?
00:23 Stick around to find out.
00:27 I'm Ashlyn Addison from EventChain.io, and this is a crypto coin show, where I decrypt of facts to keep you on track in the crypto world.
00:37 Bitcoin is the first digital currency to see widespread adoption.
00:42 And although payments are conducted between pseudonyms, Bitcoin cannot offer strong privacy guarantees.
00:46 Payment transactions are recorded in a public ledger from which much information can be deduced.
00:52 Zcash encrypts the contents of shielded transactions.
00:57 With encrypted information the protocol uses a cryptographic method to verify the validity.
01:02 Zcash uses zero knowledge proof construction called zkSNARKs.
01:05 Zero knowledge proof allow Zcash network to maintain a secure balance on the ledger without revealing the parties or the amounts involved in the transaction.
01:16 All of the metadata is encrypted and used to prove that nobody is stealing or cheating the system.
01:21 ZkSNARK is the heart of Zcash, it's what makes it so private.
01:26 And zero knowledge proof are supposed to be Zcash token feature.
01:30 In Zcash, transactions are less than one kilobyte and take under six milliseconds to verify.
01:37 Orders of magnitude much more competitive than Bitcoin.
01:39 Zcash can be both private and public when chosen.
01:42 Payments sent from a shielded address to a transparent address reveal the received balance.
01:48 While payments from a transparent address to a shielded address protect the receiving value of ZEC.
01:52 Zcash is currently the 13th largest market cap on coinmarketcap.com.
01:58 It's currently sitting at a 200 dollar coin value with 350 million dollar market cap.
02:03 Zcash topped out at a 630 million dollar market cap, peaking at just over 400 dollars a coin on the market in late June.
02:13 1.7 million coins are in circulation and the team is investigating options for the future which enables accounting for all of the Zcash in existence.
02:22 But for now we don't know what the exact distribution is although it's said the total supply will end up being the same as Bitcoin.
02:28 The ZEC will probably go back up to its all-time high and break through it, but buying now and selling out the current top isn't even a 15% game.
02:36 So maybe pick up a few on Poloniex to diversify if it dips, and get yourself into the Zcash game long term.
02:44 Zooko Wilcox, the founder of CEO, and CEO of Zcash, with more than 20 years experience in open decentralized systems, cryptography and startups, as well he's founded least authority, a simple secure cloud storage system.
03:00 Beside him, he has a strong team of scientists and engineers working tirelessly and ensuring Zcash runs smoothly.
03:08 Their top advisors are Gavin Andresen and Vitalik Buterin, two of the biggest cryptocurrency names right now.
03:13 Their investors are DCG Pantera capital, San bushi Capital, Roger ver, Vlad Zamfir, Barry Silbert and Erik Voorhees, all huge names in digital currencies.
03:25 The Zcash client only has official support for Linux, and they're not intending on offering any versions for Mac or Windows, though third parties have ported versions over unofficially.
03:36 What do you think of Z cash?
03:39 Do you see its privacy advantages enough for people to use it instead of Bitcoin?
03:43 Do you think that by having these huge names backing the project it brings instant credibility and success?

Zcash Ceremony

00:00 Zcash is a cryptocurrency built on bitcoins codebase, it is dedicated to protecting your privacy.
00:05 It is the first digital currency to combine the immutability of the blockchain with advanced cryptographic techniques to provide secure and completely confidential transactions.
00:15 This technology is designed for everyone who's interested in exercising their right to privacy.
00:21 To initialize the Zcash network, a team of veteran computer scientists and engineers used a number of techniques designed to work together to create what we believe was the most remarkable and sophisticated cryptographic ceremony that has ever been executed.
00:36 This protocol was basically equivalent to generating a public/private key pair, except the key pair was created in pieces.
00:43 At the end of the ceremony, the public key was assembled to enable proper functioning of the network, while the unassembled private key pieces were destroyed.
00:52 While the private key would not have allowed the violation of anyone's privacy, it would have allowed the creation of counterfeit Zcash.
01:00 So we went to extraordinary lengths to make sure that it never came into existence at all.
01:05 The ceremony's first core defense was multi-party computation.
01:10 Six participants in undisclosed locations across the globe collaborated to construct the public key needed to make Zcash work.
01:18 Participating parties included an original cypherpunk, a distinguished information security firm and a Bitcoin core developer whose station was mobile.
01:27 Each of the six participants individually generated only one piece of the full public and private keys.
01:34 The private key pieces were kept isolated through use of the second core defense.
01:39 An air-gap was used to keep the computers which generated the keys physically disconnected from all networks.
01:47 These air-gapped machines were called the compute nodes.
01:50 Each of these computers was bought new from a random store and were never connected to any network during their entire life.
01:57 To make sure, the participants physically removed the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios before powering the computer on.
02:04 The air-gap eliminated most of the ways that could allow someone to potentially compromised these computer, since they are incapable of making or receiving network connections.
02:13 In addition to these isolated machines, each participant used a separate computer which was connected to the Internet, called a network node.
02:22 To share their processed information with the other participants and construct the public key, the air gap was bridged exclusively with right ones DVDs.
02:31 The use of these discs constituted a third core defense, the creation of evidence trails.
02:36 The information burned to the DVDs and pass between the compute nodes in the network nodes cannot be erased later.
02:44 This way even if someone were able to somehow get maliciously crafted data onto the discs, they would provide an enduring evidence trail of exactly what messages were passed.
02:55 We also made a hash chain, a successive series of characters derive from the data, of all the ceremonies messages to create a permanent verifiable record.
03:04 And we posted those to Twitter, the Internet Archive and timestamp them into the Bitcoin blockchain.
03:11 In addition to the three core defenses, the participants used a custom-built security hardened version of Linux, which is now available for public review, along with the software used in the ceremony.
03:22 Further several stations documented with photo, video or audio recordings and one station invited an independent journalist.
03:31 When the ceremony was complete, each participant was tasked to destroy any trace of their private key piece.
03:38 Several creative or should we say destructive methods were employed.
03:44 Zcash is the first protocol of its kind.
03:48 It is the product of years of scientific research, advanced engineering and diligent security work.
03:52 It is designed to provide the privacy critical to freedom, in an era of mass surveillance.
03:59 In fact, we believe it's possible that Zcash may be for economic collaboration, what the Internet has been for communication.

Frequently asked questions[edit]

  • What is the difference between Zcash, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies?
Zcash focuses on full privacy for payments and transactions made. But all the payments and transactions made with Bitcoin and most other currencies are recorded on the public ledger, which is open for the public.
